BOOKS ON OLD ENGLISH INNS

Old inns and taverns abound in southern England. Many are haunted, thatched, old coaching inns or were used by highwaymen, smugglers and the Press Gangs.

Pub writer, Donald Stuart has collected history, stories, photographs and line drawings of several thousand inns and produced several books. These books include the origins of inns, such architectural details as inglenook fireplaces, meaning of pub names, unusual inn signs, history of towns and villages including Saxon/Norman names. In many cases the inns were visited by royalty, particularly Elizabeth 1, in their travels throughout the country. Some illustrations show how inns looked in the 14th century.  The four books are: ‘Old inns and villages’ of Hampshire and Isle of Wight, Dorset, Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Retired journalist, Stuart travelled by train, bus and bicycle to visit these inns. He is a member of the Pub History Society, Inn Sign Society and CAMRA. He has received an award from the Goodliff Fund and has been entered for the main Cambridgeshire award for local history books.

NEWSPAPER REVIEWS

“Cheers! The old English inns and public houses of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are celebrated in a new book packed with fascinating facts and tales from the local countryside. Author Donald Stuart , in the latest guide of his series tracing the history of pubs, watering holes, and locals brings together dozens of rural stories, legends and superstitions happenings from all over the county.’’ SOUTHERN DAILY ECHO.

“Rare is the olde worlde pub that does not have a ghost attached and there are plenty of them in Donald Stuart’s Old English Inns, Dorset. Painstakingly researched, it throws up several nuggets of local colour that range from the supernatural to the occasionally tragic, but as good a reason to visit the hostelries.” DAILY ECHO, DORSET
